History
Since 1969, Golden Steer Steakhouse has been a hot spot for great steaks, chops, ribs, seafood, and world-famous French Onion Soup.
Prior to becoming the Golden Steer, the building located at 7635 Roosevelt Rd, housed many different businesses. The first business to occupy this spot was an Irish pub opened by Abraham Lincoln Hopkins, an immigrant from Ireland, in 1934. The Irish pub was well known for its “Irish Wakes” and stayed in operation until Hopkins passed in 1945.
In the 1950s the building housed The Pink Clock. It was known as a hideaway for “The Outfit” and its boss Sam Giancana. Giancana had his headquarters at The Armory, which is present-day Charlie's Restaurant in Forest Park. In the current dining room used to be the famous dance floor of the Clock.
Golden Steer Steakhouse was opened by John Vlahos in 1969. John was later joined by his brother Taki. During the ownership of the Vlahos brothers, there would be many famous faces that would dine at the Steer. From movie stars like Elizabeth Taylor (drank Jack Daniels neat), numerous local politicians (including Gov. Jim Thompson) and many of the star Blackhawks players of that era such as Stan Mikita and Denis Savard. Taki bought the restaurant from his brother in 1979 and ran the business until 1997.
In 1997, two cousins, Kiriakos A. Tzouras and Kiriakos P. Tzouras (better known to everyone in Forest Park as “Little Charlie” and “Big Charlie”) bought the business from Taki. In the 26 years of their ownership, many things have changed but the Golden Steer stays the same. During that time the restaurant became a Chicagoland phenomenon when it was featured on Check, Please! on WTTW Channel 11 in January 2010. The whole Chicagoland area came to see the place that was a hidden gem for the locals became a sensation. A few years later, in May 2012, the Steer was featured on WGN’s Chicago’s Best. A new wave of food lovers found their way to discover the famous Baked French Onion Soup and the best steaks in the west suburbs.
In 2019, the Golden Steer Steakhouse celebrated 50 years of serving the near Western Suburbs, as well as the rest of Chicagoland, with great steaks, chops, ribs, seafood, and world-famous French Onion Soup. If only these walls could talk, imagine the history you’d hear.

Longtime employee Elba Caragher purchased the Golden Steer in October 2023 to continue its rich history. Elba has been serving the finest martinis for over 20 years making customers into friends and family. The tradition continues so come and create your own memories.
